Lecture "Kernel Methods in Bioinformatics" in summer semester 2006

Content:

In this lecture, we will present the research topic of kernel methods in bioinformatics. Students will learn the theory behind kernel methods, the most prominent applications in molecular biology and how to utilize kernel methods for their own research projects.
Kernel methods are a family of machine learning algorithms that solve data mining tasks such as classification, principal component analysis and novelty detection. As a first major advantage, kernel methods can be used on structured data, such as strings, graphs and time series which are numerous in biological databases. As a second benefit, kernel learning can be used to fuse several data sources into one similarity measure, when dealing with sources of heterogeneous biological data. Furthermore, kernel methods can deal with missing variables, a problem that frequently occurs in microarray data analysis.
